Teaching Guide for the Early Books

Download this Guide

This document tells teachers and parents the underlying philosophy of the early Jelly and Bean books. The books were written before 'synthetic phonics' became the recommended way to teach children to read and write in the UK school curriculum. They were written before the Rose Review was commissioned and before the Department for Children, Schools and Families introduced their Phonic Programme 'Letters and Sounds'. They were devised in 1999 and 2000 to teach children to read using the sight and sound of simple CVC words with the introduction of high frequency words very slowly. They have hardly changed since then and they fit the Phonic Phases of 'Letters and Sounds' almostperfectly.
