Phases of Phonic Progression

Jelly and Bean books are graded within the phases of phonic progression as outlined below. Information about the phases of phonic progression can be found in the official website for Letters and Sounds at

www.standards.dfes.gov.uk/local/clld/las.html

or it can be accessed from  www.standards.dfes.gov.uk/phonics  ....... from where 'letters and sounds' is accessed.

Essentially:-

Phase 1 relates to speaking and listening skills. These do not require books.
Phase 2 teaches the grapheme-phoneme (letter/sound) correspondences of most of the letters of the alphabet.

The tricky words 'the I no to go' are also introduced at this stage.

Phase 3 teaches the following:-

The remaining letters of the alphabet, i.e. 'q v z w j x y',
the consonant digraphs 'ch, sh, th, ng',
and one grapheme of each of the 44 phonemes

The Jelly and Bean books for the Reception Year Phase 3 do not use all the 44 phonemes.

The phonemes not used are :- |oi|   |ur|   |er|   |air|   |ear|   |ure|

For information of the graphemes used with each of the other phonemes, please go to the Phonemes Page.

Phase 4 teaches how to read and spell adjacent consonants at the beginning of CCVC words and the end of CVCC words including CCVCC words.

The Jelly and Bean books for this phase use only the vowels
'a e i o u' within these type of words.

This means that the books are 100% decodable and they provide reading material that gives confidence and support to early readers.

Phase 5 teaches the alternative graphemes for all the vowel phonemes, i.e. the vowel digraphs and trigraphs.

Each grapheme is introduced singly in two separate series which build cumulatively.

The Long Vowel Series introduces
'ay ee oo ea ai oa a-e i-e o-e ow y ie ue ew igh u-e' in that order, so that later books contain graphemes from earlier books.

English Vowels Set 2 introduces
'ow er ou oo ar or ur ir oi ear aw/au ea air/are' in that order and cumulatively.

These two series should be used in conjunction with each other. If they are used in the following order both series are completely decodable:

Long Vowel Series 1-6
English Vowels 1-6
Long Vowel Series 7-16
English Vowels 7-12
