Jelly and Bean

Phonic Phase 5 Resources

In Phase 5 children learn more letter combinations for the vowel sounds of the English language. In Jelly and Bean books these are 'ir, au, aw, air, ew, ue, igh, ear, oi, oy, a-e, e-e, i-e, o-e, u-e'.

Children also learn that most English vowel graphemes correspond to more than one phoneme, e.g. 'a' is pronounced differently in the words 'cat, baby, father, wasp, tall'  and,  e.g. 'ea' is pronounced differently in the words 'leaf, head, break, create'.

They also learn that most English phonemes correspond to more than one grapheme, e.g. /ee/ in the words 'deep, bead, field, theme, me', and /k/ in 'cat, kit, duck, school'.

Written English is very complex.

Books

English Vowels Set 1 uses each of the vowel graphemes 'ow, er, ou, oo, ar, or, ur' in common words. The graphemes are introduced sequentially and they are used cumulatively throughout the series. The stories are written in the past tense, so that the common verbs 'were, was, saw, came, heard, thought, took,' are used throughout. Each story is roughly 200-220 words in length. These books are classed as Phase 3 for vowel content and Phase 5/6 for past tense verbs content. They also span the green/orange book bands.

Follifoot Farm Series 3 concentrates on using words containing the split digraph (magic 'e'), e.g. 'a-e' (cave), 'i-e' (white), 'o-e' (nose), in a complete story told in six parts. The books should be read in the order 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 for children to understand the sequence of events. The books are written in the present tense. Each book is roughly 250 words in length.

The Further Vowel Series introduces each of the vowel graphemes 'ow (as in 'show'), ew (as in 'flew' and 'new'), ue (as in 'blue' and 'rescue'), u-e (as in 'cute' and 'June'), igh, ear (as in 'bear' and 'year'). The books also use words containing split digraphs. The stories are written in the past tense. Each story is roughly 220 words in length.

English Vowels Set 2 introduces each of the vowel graphemes 'ir, oi, oy, aw, au, ea (head), air'. The graphemes are introduced sequentially in that order and they are used cumulatively throughout the series. The stories are written in the past tense. Each story is roughly 200-230 words in length.

The Past Tense Verbs Series concentrates on the use of past tense verbs ending with '-ed' and verb participles ending with '-ing'. All three pronunciations of 'ed' are used, as in 'growled, hopped, wanted'. Each story is approximately 220 words in length.
