Jelly and Bean

Phonic Phase 5 Resources

In Phase 5 of Letters and Sounds (2007) children meet more letter combinations for the vowel sounds of the English language. In Jelly and Bean books these are 'ir, au, aw, air, are, ew, ue, igh, ear, oi, oy, a-e, e-e, i-e, o-e, u-e, ure'.

Children are also taught that most English vowel graphemes correspond to more than one phoneme, e.g. 'a' is pronounced differently in the words 'cat, baby, father, wasp, tall'  and,  e.g. 'ea' is pronounced differently in the words 'leaf, head, break, create'.

They also learn that most English phonemes correspond to more than one grapheme, e.g. /ee/ in the words 'deep, bead, field, theme, me', and /k/ in 'cat, kit, duck, school'.

Written English is very complex.

Books

Follifoot Farm Series 1 uses vocabulary with the vowel spellings 'ai, ar, ay, ea, ee, er, oa, oo, or, ou, ow' throughout all the six books in simple words connected with the farm, e.g. 'rain, farm, hay, eat, sheep, water, road, flood, soon, cow.' Each story is roughly 150 words in length. The sentence structure and vocabulary are suitable for the Green Book Band.

Follifoot Farm Series 2 uses vocabulary with the same vowel spellings as Follifoot Farm Series 1 throughout all the six books in simple words connected with the farm. The vowel spelling 'are' as in 'scared' is also introduced. This series is one continuous story told in six parts. Children need to read the books in the order 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 to follow the story and to appreciate the cliffhanger ending on the last page of each book. They are well motivated by this, wanting to go on to the next book to find out what happens. Each story is roughly 160 words in length. The sentence structure and vocabulary are suitable for the Green Book band.

Alfie's Adventure is the first series to be wholly written in the past tense. It uses the verbs 'was, saw, were, came, gave'. These may have to be treated as 'tricky' words at this stage. It is one complete story and the books need to be read in numerical order. The graphemes 'oi, ear, ea' are used in the words 'noise, near, head'. They are not used in any other words. The sentence structure, language complexity and word count in the books makes them suitable for the Green Book Band also.

English Vowels Set 1 uses each of the vowel graphemes 'ow, er, ou, oo, ar, or, ur', in many new words. The graphemes are introduced sequentially and they are used cumulatively throughout the series. The stories are written in the past tense. The common verbs 'were, was, saw, came, heard, could, thought, took,' are used throughout. Each story is roughly 200-220 words in length and suitable for the Green Book Band.

Follifoot Farm Series 3 concentrates on using words containing the split digraph 'a-e' (cave), 'i-e' (white), 'o-e' (nose), in a complete story told in six parts. The books should be read in the order 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 for children to understand the sequence of events. The books have been rewritten in the past tense for 2020. Each book is roughly 250 words in length. The language complexity is now more appropriate for the Orange Book Band.

The Further Vowel Series introduces each of the vowel graphemes 'ow (as in 'show'), ew (as in 'flew' and 'new'), ue (as in 'blue' and 'rescue'), u-e (as in 'cute' and 'June'), igh, ear (as in 'bear' and 'year'). The books also use words containing split digraphs. The stories are written in the past tense. Each story is roughly 220 words in length.

English Vowels Set 2 introduces each of the vowel graphemes 'ir, oi, oy, aw, au, ea (head), air' in as many words as possible. The graphemes are introduced sequentially in that order and they are used cumulatively throughout the series. The stories are written in the past tense. Each story is roughly 200-230 words in length.

The Past Tense Verbs Series concentrates on the use of past tense verbs ending with '-ed' and verb participles ending with '-ing'. All three pronunciations of 'ed' are used, as in 'growled, hopped, wanted'. Almost all the graphemes we have introduced in the reading scheme are used in this series. Each story is approximately 220 words in length.
